Libby Caulfield on her return from maternity leave
People need to take leave from work for a wide variety of reasons, and returning can be a daunting prospect. In my case, it was coming back from a year of maternity leave; leaving my baby, switching my brain back into professional mode, and navigating public transport for the first time since the pandemic. But coming back to work has also been gentle, gradual and manageable, thanks to the support from IMPOWER’s People Team, company leaders and my colleagues. I’ve been supported throughout my pregnancy, during my leave, and since my return.
IMPOWER recently changed its parental leave policy, providing its employees with six months full pay to support them financially through the time taken off. This policy was produced in consultation with the company’s own working parents to ensure it met the needs of those taking time off. The knowledge I would be supported financially gave me the opportunity to spend the whole first year of my daughter’s life with her. Time I will cherish forever.
My maternity leave started rather dramatically, and earlier than planned, with pregnancy complications. Despite being in the middle of managing a complex project, I was taken care of beautifully and supported to slow down by my brilliant manager. I ultimately started maternity leave sooner which, on reflection, was exactly what I needed. My colleagues were so supportive and sent gifts and cards and plenty of messages wishing me well.
Whilst off I kept in regular contact, and in late spring the People Team got in touch to invite me to the company away day (a two-day event offsite and an opportunity for everyone to connect for training and development, away from the daily pressures of projects). The idea of seeing everyone again and being part of the event was so exciting but with a heavy heart I responded that it wouldn’t be possible for me to go because I was still breastfeeding the baby and therefore couldn’t leave her. The People Team responded with ‘bring her along if you like, we’d all like a cuddle’. I brought my partner with me to babysit onsite and was able to join almost all of the event. It is this commitment to inclusivity that sets IMPOWER apart in the way it cares for its people.
In the final months of my time away, my manager encouraged me to successfully apply for promotion, so I returned in a new role, on part time hours, which helped to balance the complex emotions connected with this transition. Already, colleagues are regularly checking in on my wellbeing and making me feel well and truly welcome to be back. I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of this company. If you are worried about balancing a career in consulting with a young family, IMPOWER is a great place to be.
